Team Member Spotlight: Bill Costan

Bill Costan is our Western PA Retail Market Manager.

What led you to pursue a career in banking? What has kept you interested in the industry?

I began my banking career in 1996 in hopes of finding a job that would compliment my personality and education while creating a stable life for my family. I started out as a mortgage originator and quickly moved through the ranks in various roles within the banking industry.

Banking seems to be in my blood, much like other career bankers have indicated. I’ve had some outstanding mentors over the past 30 years that gave great advice and challenged me to step outside my comfort zone. The thrill of the next sale, helping a client, and understanding that sales is nothing more than education, has kept me in the finance lane for as long as it has. When you wake up each day, eager to get to work, it’s not a job.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

My typical workday starts off by expecting to make today better than yesterday, staying positive, and making a difference for at least one person. Generally, each day is the same by putting out the biggest ‘fire’ first, empowering my team to be successful, providing information, asking questions, and having good conversations.

How do you deliver consistent and unwavering service in your role as a Retail Market Manager?

Maybe I am oversimplifying my approach to providing and expecting Unwavering Service, but actively listening and having conversations has been the key to my success. In part, knowing who your customer is and what role you play in that dynamic, sets everyone up for success. I’m sure we all have had those interactions that could have gone better. At the end of the day, I believe one or more of the following is missing when an imperfect interaction occurs: active listening, having a professional conversation, knowing who the customer is, and/or understanding the role we are in.

As you approach your one-year anniversary with MPB, is there a project or accomplishment that you are most proud of?

I am proud to say that I am a part of the Mid Penn Bank team. Professionalism and integrity are second to none.

What is your best piece of advice for someone new to Mid Penn Bank?

Listen and be coachable.
